Scholars introduced at Winter Symposium

We were pleased to welcome our 2025 scholarship recipients to our Winter Symposium on Feb. 11 in Charleston. Students traveled to Charleston and were recognized at the luncheon.

Five Marcus Rennix scholarships in the amount of $5,000 were awarded each to Horticulture, Landscape Architecture and other green industry students attending WVU. To qualify, these students must  be WV residents who have completed half the course work in their major and have met other scholarship requirements.

  • Penelope Edwards of Morgantown, a senior majoring in Landscape Architecture
  • Chelsea Elliott of Bridgeport, a senior majoring in Landscape Architecture
  • Samuel Glazier of Charleston, a senior studying Landscape Architecture
  • Alaira Hudson of Davis, a senior majoring in Landscape Architecture
  • Hailey Lane of New Martinsville, a senior studying Horticulture.

This year we introduced the George W. Longenecker scholarship in memory of a longtime WVU landscape architecture and horticulture professor. The scholarship is aimed at encouraging students to consider careers in Landscape Architecture and Horticulture and provides full tuition coverage for four semesters. It’s open to high school seniors, who are WV residents and have been accepted into and enrolled in the Landscape Architecture program at WVU. In 2024, we selected two students for this scholarship.

  • Kiersten Smith of Oak Hill who is now in her second semester, attended the symposium.
  • Sarah Gompers of Buckhannon who is also in her second semester, was not able to attend.
